NEON BAROQUE CHANEL 2010 SPRING SUMMER HAUTE COUTURE
Posted On: 2/28/2010

An aluminum and colored light décor announces the “Neon Baroque” tone of Chanel’s Spring Summer 2010 Haute Couture collection. Seated in deep couches upholstered in silver fabric, Chanel’s clients can be spotted amongst other devoted admirers, including Chanel ambassadress Anna Mouglalis, French actresses Amira Casar, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Clémence Poésy and Elisa Sednaoui, TV presenter Alexa Chung, Ukrainian actress Olga Kurylenko, supermodel Claudia Schiffer, rapper and producer Kanye West, and contemporary Chinese artist Yi Zhou. “Pastel and silver”, explains Karl Lagerfeld, “It’s a sort of flash that I had one morning, that I then brought to reality in the décor and in the collection.” Thus, for Spring Summer 2010, we are greeted by a festival of soft colors that the designer sends out one by one, with a notable absence of black. Watercolor yellows, pinks, cloud grays, and pistachio greens dominate, but are contrasted by some more acid tones. Furthermore, a silvery touch snakes in and out, on trims with sculpted buttons, mercury-effect embroideries, leather mittens and camellias in hammered pewter. It is picked up again on short boots with sculpted heels and imposing heart-shaped, streaked hair. Lace, satin, tulle and chiffon are brought into the mix with both audacity and restraint, combining artful draping, refined embroideries and precious accessories. Dresses play with asymmetry, lightness and sensuality. Strapless, sleeved, collared or finished with wide straps, they are decorated with pearls, crystals or bright silver sequins. Sheath dresses that reach the ankle are also revealing, either at the back or with a plunging neckline, and long crystal necklaces caress the body from the neck to the small of the back. 1300 pleated, waffled and ruffled flowers make garlands of tulle and pale or peachy pink chiffon, that, assembled one by one, make balloon-shaped ensembles and capes. And finally, with her bodice and sleeves entirely embroidered with foliated scrolls and silver coils, the fairy-like bride floats in. Light as a breath, she glides in a whirl of chiffon, satin and tulle ruffles in ever-deepening tones of pink. With this “neon baroque” collection, Karl Lagerfeld breathes energy and modernity.
